Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund Augustus secretly married the young widow Barbara Radziwiłł, risking his crown and the stability of the state. This marriage caused an unprecedented political scandal, and the king's mother, Bona Sforza, and Polish nobles did everything they could to separate them. Despite immense pressure, Sigismund managed to have Barbara crowned, but her triumph was short-lived – she soon died. The king's grief was endless; he escorted her coffin barefoot from Krakow to Vilnius. For the rest of his life, he remained faithful to her memory, and their love became one of the most prominent legends in Lithuanian history.
