Prince Pedro I of Portugal fell madly in love with Inês de Castro, but this girl was politically unacceptable to the royal family. In an attempt to end his son's relationship, the king, his father, ordered Inês's murder, which caused Pedro immense fury and unspeakable pain. Upon becoming king, Pedro publicly declared that they were married and recognized Inês as the rightful queen posthumously. Legend has it that he ordered her body exhumed, crowned, and compelled the courtiers to kiss the deceased queen's hand. Finally, he found her murderers and savagely avenged her, thus proving his eternal fidelity.
