King Edward II of England maintained an extremely close and controversial relationship with his favorite, Piers Gaveston. The king’s attention and gifts to Gaveston caused immense political jealousy and resistance from influential nobles. The lords felt spurned and humiliated, demanding the king’s beloved friend be exiled. The conflict culminated when Gaveston was captured and murdered, which emotionally devastated the king. Unable to manage the political crisis and his grief, Edward II was later deposed and killed himself.
