Axel von Fersen and Marie Antoinette
Swedish Count Axel von Fersen was considered the closest person to the French Queen Marie Antoinette and likely her lover. During the Revolution, when everyone turned their backs on the royal family, Fersen remained loyal and organized their risky escape from Paris. Although the escape plan failed and the queen was later guillotined, their connection is evidenced by surviving secret letters. Fersen never married and mourned his beloved, whom he tried to save, his entire life.
