The renowned medieval philosopher Pierre Abélard fell madly in love with his talented student Héloïse, disregarding the strict moral norms of the time. Their passion was so strong that the couple had a child and, to protect Abélard's reputation, they secretly married. However, Héloïse's uncle, upon learning of these ties, reacted cruelly and radically – Abélard was forcibly castrated, thus physically separating them forever. After this event, both lovers retreated to monasteries, but their spiritual connection did not break. They wrote letters to each other for the rest of their lives, pouring out their pain, philosophical reflections, and undying love. This correspondence has survived to this day and is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic love texts in the history of Western culture.
