This special combination – the taste of sweet and sour oranges intertwined with the delicate saltiness of sea salt and the crispiness of chopped almonds – has been created for a good reason. Sigismund Augustus, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, pampered the love of his life Barbara Radziwiłł each and every day, treating her to some of the most precious fruits – oranges, which Queen Barbora just adored.
The name of the sweets also makes sense. Owing to its greatness and dramatic character, the story of Sigismund Augustus and Barbara Radziwiłł became the most romantic legend of Vilnius about secret love ever.
According to researchers, oranges appeared in our country during the Great Culinary Revolution, together with the court of Bona Sforza, in the first half of the 16th century. It is believed that orange peel, the valuable spice of that time, was the first to reach our country and oranges as fruits followed later.
Bona Sforza (1494–1557) was Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania (since 1518), wife of Sigismund I the Old and mother of Sigismund Augustus. The merits of Bona Sforza are associated with the spread of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Italian Renaissance in Lithuania and Poland. It was she who brought the traditions of Italian cuisine, along with such exotic products as cauliflower, spinach, tomatoes, oranges, and others, to Lithuania and Poland. The traditions of Italian cuisine took root and spread in the cuisine of the Lithuanian aristocracy in the 16th century. These innovations were taken over by the son of Bona Sforza, Sigismund Augustus, the Grand Duke of Lithuania. During his reign, there appeared more exotic foods, such as capers, lemons, and olives.
